LA cop Jericho Crewe got the hell out of Mosely, Montana, when he was seventeen. Fifteen years later, he’s back, and everything is just as messed up as when he left. He planned a quick visit to deal with his injured father, but of course things are never that simple. Family complications, police complications, social complications—and, as always, Wade Granger complications.
Jericho and Wade had been so close, once upon a time. First friends, then more than friends—and then, after Jericho’s escape, nothing. Wade’s magnetism hasn’t been lessened by a decade and a half apart; even when Jericho learns that Wade is the prime suspect in the death of Jericho’s father, the old connection still sparks.
When Jericho’s newly discovered half siblings are kidnapped, he needs to trust someone to help him find them. Wade’s a terrible choice, but Jericho’s never been known for his good judgment. Anyway, he’d rather make a bad decision with Wade than a good one with anybody else.

I really enjoyed this story while I was reading it. This is a beginning of the series and apparently according to Riptide publishing website it is a four part series, so to get the whole story you would have to pay twelve dollars at least (since I am not sure if the next books will be priced same as this one or not).Jericho Crewe, now LAPD detective comes back to the small town of Mosely, Montana, where he was born and lived till he was seventeen. Jericho left at seventeen and mostly did not look back since his dear old dad was abusive to him, although he also left his first love when he left - Wade with whom they got into mischief and even in some trouble with the law together when they were teens. Jericho's exemplary military service, deployment record went a long way towards LAPD hiring him despite him being arrested as a teenager. I liked that the author addressed that moment.
Jericho is back because he got a strange phone call from the woman telling him his father is hurt and to hurry back. When Jericho comes back he learns that his father is dead. He is not too upset, but his father was still his father and he decides to figure out what is going on and since there are signs that his father was probably murdered, maybe find out who killed him.
Oh and sheriff in town is his other childhood friend, Kayla, a daughter of the former sheriff, however federal agents are also here looking into investigation, since Jericho's father dabbled in some illegal activities like smuggling so maybe his business associates killed him. And surprises just keep coming because Jericho learned that his daddy remarried and he now has young half siblings and step mother Nikki who called him.
And Wade is still in town and would love to get a hold on Jericho's father business contacts. Lots of stuff had the potential to happen and it kept happening. I described the set up of the story which we learn very early, believe me I did not describe any real spoilers.
I really liked Jerricho, I liked his sarcastic voice, I liked him for being truly honorable guy who decided to stick around and help. I have to say though - while to a degree I understand his newly found step mother's behavior (no, she did not kill anybody - although maybe I should not be so fast, maybe we will learn that she did kill somebody in the next books although I doubt it) boy the woman was an ungrateful shrew I thought.
No thank you to Jerricho? Not even a thank you? He never knew you existed and after everything he did, not even a thank you. I know I would have left and not turned back. Wow.
This was a true romantic suspense IMO, because suspense storyline drove the plot, and of course there was a tension between Jerricho and Wade, but nothing happened. I wonder for how long Jerricho's resolve that he is supposed to uphold the law and Wade is on the other side of the law would last. I am certainly giving the next book a chance, but I recognize that it has the potential to be thrown against the wall for me as well.

Long Shadows Common Law Book 1 edition by Kate Sherwood Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
It's Kate Sherwood! 'Nuf said.
I like the book I didn't love it but I'm curious enough to read the next book in the series
Definitely a surprise and different from the usual. It contains a conflict that seems too massive to overcome, so I will continue just to see if and how the author manages it.
I truly enjoy Kate Sherwood's books, actually loved this one, story was unexpected with great characters. So sad the others in this series are no longer available for . Thanks much
Brilliant beginning to the new series. I love the maturity of the characters and the ominous sense of the trees hemming in the small town. I'm not sure if it feels Rocky Mountain - almost feel KS has been watching the rather excellent Justified (set in the Appalachians, filmed in CA), with the somewhat renegade lawman MC reluctantly revisiting and being drawn back to his home town and messed-up family. For sure Wade has something of the eloquent outlaw Boyd Crowder! But this isn't a criticism - I'm just wondering if some inspiration came KS's way. Her characters are fantastic, lots of shades of grey and few cliches. Not sure if I get why the MC has such a blank connection to his life in LA - hopefully this will be explained in future works. RIght now it seems like just convenient setup for him to come home. But how has he been made anew over the last 10 years? I'd like a bit more back story. I love it that KS doesn't do the alternating POV thing which plagues the genre. She and we have to do the work to bring the characters and their feelings alive by more writerly/readerly means. Keep up the excellent work!
I've read this entire series twice. It is marvelous and even better on the second read. Jericho returns to his hometown of Moseley, Montana after 15 years. He received a call that his father was injured and, upon his arrival, finds out his father is dead. He really ought to leave now.
While he was away, he served in Afghanistan and earned a Silver Star. Now he's a Los Angeles homicide detective. He hasn't spoken to his father in 10 years. His father was abusive and a criminal who has done a couple of stints in jail. Moseley is close to the Canadian border and its main industry is drug smuggling. Unbeknownst to Jericho, his father remarried and he has two half-siblings.
His high school friend, Kayla, is now the sheriff. Her job is complicated by the federal agents from both the DEA and the FBI who are camped out long term in her jurisdiction.
His one-time lover, Wade, has got his fingers in most of the criminal activity. The feds can't pin anything on him. Kayla can't either but she isn't trying as hard.
The book is told through Jericho's POV. We see him certain in some things - his own moral code which occasionally deviates from the laws and his disdain for people telling him what to do. We see him struggling with other things - his frustration over not knowing the whole picture and his conflicted feelings about just about everyone. His main quandaries are his half-siblings, who are uncontrolled brats but still his blood, and Wade, who is unabashedly criminal but still has a hold on Jericho.
Wade and Jericho's connection is like a fiery golden cord pulling them toward each other but burning them when they get too close. This is the first book in a series so don't expect the contrast to magically disappear in this book.
The mystery is intricate. The bad guy becomes obvious at some point but the hows and whys take ,longer to put together. the ending is exciting, fast paced and well-crafted action.
