This story was fairly predictable. Fast relationship, almost close to instant love affair...some drama with a criminal husband, ending with a HEA. But I liked this author's writing style. It's fresh, direct and somewhat original. I mean, this story has been told before...many times. But Ms. Fields made it feel new.I liked Morrison Caldwell. But how old is he? Anyone know? Morrison and his brothers were raised by an abusive, alcoholic father until he (Morrison) broke away and made his own way in the world. He becomes a professional card player...a card shark/sharp, in Las Vegas. He does very well for himself but when he meets Hailey Poe, he loses all sane reasoning. His interest in her borders on obsession. I like this type of character. Guys that fall so fast and hard that they lose all rationality.
At 17 y/o, Hailey Poe is forced into a loveless marriage surrounded by corruption. Her only goal is escape. She's never known kindness or trust from a man. She doesn't know what it means to feel love or satisfaction. She's been degraded and mentally abused in her slave-like marriage. She's owned and forced to work off a never-ending debt with her life.
This story was a great dramatic romance between a kind and caring man and a mistrustful young woman who's known nothing but hardship her whole life. Hailey doesn't know how to react when a man is kind to her. It's a very fast paced story and events happen too quickly. Their relationship is rushed...their is no believability because emotions blossom too quickly. Character descriptions are non-existent. So I'm reading this and wondering what the heck our protagonists look like. Eventually, albeit much too late to care, I find out that Hailey has blond hair and Morrison has blue eyes and that he's 6' tall. But like I said, I didn't care at that point. This story could've been so much better if the author just slowed it down. I thought it was worthy of 3★'s because of the writing style and fresh dialogue...and a less than original story told in a new/fresh/original fashion.

What a great series! This 2nd book in the series focuses on Morrison "Aces" Caldwell, middle brother to Hendrix and Jagger and single Mom Hailey. They meet in a parking lot in Vegas after a fender bender and after a night of hot pleasure, Morrison, a professional gambler is smitten. Hailey is married to a douchebag gambler husband who is emotionally abusive, she also has a three year old daughter Marisa. Monte, the a-hole husband basically bought Hailey in a card game and now she is held captive in this abusive marriage until she pays him back the money he used to "buy" her.
Hailey has had a hard life and doesn't trust very easily, but Morrison is amazing in his patience with her. Morrison is cool, funny, compassionate, and a softie under that cool exterior. One thing I really liked about him was his willingness to let Hailey know upfront that he was crazy about her, he didn't play any games. He was also so sweet to her daughter. Hailey took a while to trust Morrison, and at times, I was irritated with her bc she was making Morrison pay for the jacked up relationship she had with Monte, her baby daddy. Morrison made some tremendous sacrifices for her and at one point I wanted to yell at her really? What else do you want him to do to prove us love for you?!!
Slowly but surely Hailey realizes that Morrison is the real deal and she eventually realizes that she loves Morrison as much as he loves her. The only part of the book I disliked and to be honest, didn't really get was at the end when Monte is trying to justify his actions as being protective of Hailey, REALLY? That didn't make sense and the fact that Hailey was talking to Monte like she could follow his logic just seemed incredulous to me.
But other than that, it was a good book, I look forward to Jagger's story. The resident stool warmer who keeps marrying everyone, Jared, is hilarious and deserves his own book.
Hailey is "sold" to Monte after making a bad play at a poker table that she and her mother set up. Monte and she were married for 7 years and she then found him in bed with another woman. Hailey leaves with Marissa and meets Morrison soon thereafter. Morrison and Hailey meet by accident when he blocks her car in after her shift at work at the casino has ended. Hailey has had a life based upon checks and balances and her ex-husband made sure he kept a tally sheet. Hailey's mother was a hooker who also led a depressing existence but, while Monte doesn't physically abuse Hailey he sure has left her with a warped sense of life. Morrison's childhood was no picnic and he finds himself drawn to Hailey. Hailey tries to get out of debt with her ex-husband and does succeed in paying off her debt but doesn't realize that he also put a price on their daughter. Morrison really steps up and Hailey is clueless, which didn't make sense to me. She knew Monte charged for everyone and everything so it boggled my mind that she didn't make the connection between Morrison leaving Vegas and all of his things behind and Monte telling her she and Marissa were both now free. Hailey did string Morrison along for a while and did act quite badly toward him to the point that I didn't like her for a bit in this story. Morrison knew she had to feel "free" and come to him but she just kept putting up walls and not seeing what he was doing for her. She was self-centered and had tunnel vision that all Morrison wanted to do was "own" her. She needed to stop making him pay for her and her ex-husband's mistakes. The ending was nice and did leave me feeling better about the book.
