At 17, Del Garforth begged his mother's permission to sign for him to join the Navy after news hit his hometown of Fountain, Michigan that the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor. This book retells the combat missions of the LSM-143 from the day it was commissioned until the day it was decommissioned in the Spring of 1946. Del's recollections will take you through the horrors of Kamikaze attacks and high level bombing attacks during the battle of Iwo Jima. Del relives his crew's survival of a Kaiten (suicide torpedo) attack at Kossol Passage and a suicide attempt by swimmers bearing explosives. You will witness the devastation of the typhoon at Okinawa that almost tore his ship to shreds. This tells the whole story of Del's experiences aboard the Landing Ship Medium...LSM-143

General Quarters! Memoirs of a World War II Veteran Aboard the LSM143 Ray McCoy 9780997885507 Books

In his first book, Ray McCoy has done a pretty remarkable job of giving the reader a taste of what the war in the Pacific was like for the crew of one of the "lesser" ships in the fleet, the LSM (Landing Ship Medium). Basically an enormous floating truck that ferried men and supplies from the big freighters to the beaches of islands like Peleliu, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and all the rest.
The book is based on interviews the author had with a WWII veteran who served on LSM-143, Del Garforth. Alone, a transcript of those interviews would probably have been very interesting, but McCoy took it a giant leap further by getting copies (from the National Archives) of the daily logs that were the official Navy record of virtually everything that happened on LSM-143 and the other ships mentioned by Del. He then blended Del's remembrances with the historical records to create a very complete picture of one young man's life in the Hell of war.
Taking it a step further, he then told the entire story in the first person, as if the reader was listening to Del, himself.
If you are familiar with E.B. Sledge's "With The Old Guard," this is a perfect companion to that memoir. It is entirely likely that Del's floating truck delivered some of the materiel that allowed Sledge to survive the battles of Peleliu and Iwo Jima.

Great read, thoroughly enjoyed it !!!
Excellent book. The memories of a Great American Hero of WWII are well written and an interesting read.
Interesting book
Great read, held interest all the way through to end. I love reading stories of our WW II heroes who served willing to protect our freedoms from tyranny.
This is an excellent book. Very informative and interesting. I haven't finished reading it, but am well into it. I highly recommend it.
I liked the story, and the author took considerable effort to make it work for those who are unfamiliar with WW2 in the Pacific.

But I was very disappointed that the edition I received did not have any pictures - just the placeholder icons. There are clearly a lot of pictures in the original. I wish I'd gotten them.
This is not your super-accurate historical account, it is a true memoir, and just the sort of thing that makes for a wonderful warm reading experience. He tells his story as he knew it, with all the little details about daily life, while still giving his opinions on the big picture that swirled around him. As I read this book, I could picture my father, his contemporary, having similar experiences and a very similar day to day existence. It's the story of thousands of our fathers, a little different, and a lot the same.
